My pages of ethnic and ethnographic
beads and jewelry are an expression
of my passions, and a result of an
interest that I developed over time... I
am a former bead store proprietor (8
years spent behind the counter of my
retail store) who has, over time,
become enchanted with the ancient,
the tribal, the symbolic, the cryptic and
the eclectic. I have become a
passionate collector of the hand made,
whether from thousands of years in the
past, or from artisans of today.... and I
have grown to be amazed at the
wonderful objects it is possible to
acquire.
One of the rewards of owning
ancient Roman beads, an Egyptian
amulet, 19th Century African trade
beads, a Yemeni silver bracelet, a
Precolumbian stone pendant from the
Americas or ancient stone beads from
Irian Jaya is the knowledge that the
same thing that you hold in your hand
was worn and held important by a
chain of owners extending back to its
original manufacture. The respect and
admiration for the art and history of the
piece exists within the new owner.
Eye beads were used to ward off
evil spirits, amulets protected the
wearer from harm, charms and
mementos and talismans had a very
special, very important personal and
mystic function for the owner that
becomes infused into each piece and
transformed by the modern owner into
something personal of their own.
Instead of languishing in insulated
museum cases, it's wonderful to see
these things loved, cherished, touched
and brought back to life again.
I finally have enough resources so
that I can not only collect, but sell to
other collectors... If you are interested
in personal embellishment and
adornment, in ethnic and ethnographic
jewelry, in ancient lives and past arts,
then please continue and browse
through some of my pages. I hope
that the tour intrigues and interests
you... This is my virtual bead store,
and like any proud proprietor, I am
here to answer any and all of your
questions that I can, so please look
through my pages and stop in to have
a conversation if you like...
(please remember to RELOAD or
REFRESH your browser each time you
visit so you don't miss any of the latest
additions... and do stop by often as
you can never tell when new items will
be added...)
EA2044. This pair of elaborate pendants is from the Kazak tribes of Afghanistan. The
double amulets are quite wonderful - - these are elaborately made with great detail. The
pendants are hung with real coral and make a sweet sound when walking. They do
hang nicely - I left one messy when I took the photo but it doesn't hang like that. The
amulets are 3 3/4 inches wide and the pieces are 5 3/8 inches tall. This is quite unusual.
$205.US/each pendant.
EA2045. These two amulet pendants are from the Kazak tribes of Afghanistan. As
typical they are highly decorated on all sides. These are highly impressive in their detail
and texture. The pieces are 8 3/4 inches tall and 3 1/2 inches wide. Sold separately,
they are $295.US/each pendant.
EA2046. Here are two antique silver amulets from Afghanistan. They both open so that
spiritual material or secrets can be tucked inside. Amulet #1 is nicly decorated with
smoothed silver discs and an image in the middle of leaves, flowers and two birds. The
piece is 4 3/8 inches wide and gleams nicely. $95.US. Amulet #2 has silver rings
decorating it. It is 4 1/8 inches wide and is quite heavy with a good old look to it.
$128.US. (#1 is sold)
EA2047. I have never seen a grooming set like this before. This came from the Hazara
tribe in Afghanistan. The pieces are cast and include images of fish and birds in the
dangles. The square cabochons are made of glass but are exactly the same colour as
bright and glossy carnelian. The top piece is a traditional fibula that closes with a pin,
and at the bottom are three different tools. This is quite a long piece, measuring 16
inches. Wow. It is a real collectors piece I think. 162grams. $405.US. (sold)
EA2048. This 16 1/2 inch long strand of heavy silver beads, made of spirals and spirals
and more spirals all soldered into perfect round shapes. They vary in side with the
largest one being about 5/8 inch in diameter. These are nicely worn and gleam as good
old silver should. 111grams. $278.US.
EA2050. These little pendants are 3/4 inch long and very typical in Central Asia. They
look great hanging from chains, strung onto necklaces or bracelets, or used as any kind
of ornament that you can imagine. Group #1 is 39grams (27 pendants) - $98.US
Group #2 is 33.4grams - $84.US.
EA2051. These Central Asian silver pendants could be the focus of a necklace as they
were in their past life... In group #1 the circular part is slightly under 1 inch in diameter,
with hanging loop they measure 1 1/4 inches long. 39grams (12 pendants) - $98.US.
(#1 is sold) The pendants in group #2 are a little over 3/4 inch in diameter. With the
hanging loop they are 1 1/16 inch long. 41grams (22 pendants) - $103.US.
EA2052. I have a number of groups of Central Asian silver pendants here. Hopefully
they will have a home ornamenting some piece(s) of jewellery as they did in the past.
They are all very well made and excellent quality. Pendants #1 are heart shaped with
the entire pieces being 3/4 inch long. 50grams - $125.US. Pendants #2 remind me of
shell shapes and are 5/8 inch long. They have tiny floral decorations. 34grams -
$85.US. Pendants #3 are nicely lined leaf shapes 1 1/8 inches long. 30 grams -
$75.US. (#3 is sold) Pendants #4 are old Indian coins with a diameter of 5/8 inch and
7/8 inch long including loop. 21grams - $53. Pendants #5 are shell shaped again with
discs decorating them. 42grams - $105.US. #6 is another group of the leaf shaped
pendants. 37grams - $92.US. (#6 is sold)
EA2054. There are a number of silver pendants here. #1 is 3 1/4 inches long -
$36.US. #2 is a little over 2 inches tall and made like a circular box - it has a front, a
back and walls around it. The stone in the middle is red glass - $65.US. (#2 is sold) #3
is 2 3/16 inches tall. It is very nicely worn and decorated with blue glass stones -
$55.US. #4 is domed in the front and flat in the back. It has required quite a lot of work
with the enamelling in blue and green. It is quite a solid piece - $65.US. Pendant #5 is
made of a coin - a little over 1 3/4 inches in diameter with the entire pendant being 2 1/8
inches tall. It is a thick coin studded with two carnelians $128.US. (#5 is sold)
EA2057. I hope you can see how these beads are constructed. Each one has a netted
circular part at one end, attached to a tube bead. They are 1 7/8 inches tall and have
chained pendants with heart shaped ends hanging from 6 loops around the tops of the
tubes. They are quite wonderful. 78grams. $195.US.
EA2058. I have had this type of beads before and generally sell them in small groups. I
have had requests though for enough to make a necklace with and here it is - - The
strand is 20 inches long and has many different styles of the same type of bead from
Afghanistan. All but 5 have glass facet stones set on them, in red, green, blue and
black. The fattest bead is 1 inch in diameter. I think this is a gorgeous collection and
rarely available. 140grams. $375.US.
EA2060. Strand #1 has a little over 18 inches of silver beads in it - perfect for a
necklace or for dividing up and using here and there. 59.5grams - $148.US. Strand #2
has solid silver beads so that the strand is heavier than it seems. It is 13 inches long
